We apologise for the considerable delay in sending our newsletter. We were busy preparing for the PHM Steering Council meeting in Rabat, Morocco. The meeting went well, and it was the first time we met in person since the last SC meeting in Argentina, after the People's Health Assembly 5. We are happy to share that, as planned, PHM has selected its new Global Coordinator, Dr. Aziz Rhali, from Morocco. This transition represents a major evolution in the Movement’s global governance.

The Global Secretariat of PHM will continue to operate as a collective, ensuring diverse regional representation while supporting the shift of coordination to the MENA region. It will also lead preparations for the Sixth People’s Health Assembly, to be held in Morocco in 2028.

While we appointed the new Global coordinator this year, we also lost our dear friend David Legge this year. David passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026. He was a health activist, co-founder of the PHM, but above all a beloved man, friend, leader, and role model for activists around the world. We honor David's life, his struggle for health for all, and his commitment to the People's Health Movement (PHM), the movement to which he devoted his efforts and love. PHM extends our condolences and solidarity to David's family and loved ones. We will always remember him as one of our heroes in the struggle for health. Below, we share tributes by PHM members Sundar and Fran for David Legge.

Following the update provided in the previous newsletters, a formal proposal for the anti-privatisation campaign's action plan was presented to and approved by the PHM Steering Council in Morocco. We are now working on a budget for it for 2 or 3 years. When that is done, the same proposal will be presented to the Nyeleni Global Secretariat for approval. Moreover, a campaign on the same topic will be revived at PHM. A companion proposal for what PHM circles ought to be doing in this regard was prepared by Abhay Shukla and others and was presented in Morocco. You will be hearing more about it shortly as the specific PHM Thematic Group will provide guidance.

We are sharing this Call for papers for a special issue of 'Saúde em Debate' on the topic of “Medicinal plants, herbal medicines and the dispute over the commons in Latin America”. The call has been published by CEBES (Brazilian Center for Health Studies) in partnership with ObservaPICS/VPAAPS/Fiocruz (Observatory of Traditional, Integrative, and Complementary Knowledge and Practices in Health of the Vice-Presidency for Environment, Care, and Health Promotion of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation), and with the collaboration of MSP Brazil (PHM in Brazil).

'Saúde em Debate' accepts submissions of original works – in Portuguese, English, and Spanish – that possess academic quality, social relevance, theoretical and methodological contributions, and are in line with the journal's scope. Submission deadline is March 31, 2026.

The People’s Health Movement denounces unequivocally the assaults launched by the United States and Israel on the sovereign nation of Iran. These strikes lack any legitimate justification and violate international law. They amount to an act of war that endangers the civilian population living in the region in pursuit of imperial domination over natural resources, trade routes and the entire region.

These attacks come on the heels of more than two and a half years of genocidal warfare in Palestine as well as attacks on Lebanon, Syria and Yemen, where the People’s Health Movement has already documented massive loss of life, displacement and the collapse of health infrastructure. The present aggression threatens to repeat—and amplify—those horrors on a new front.

As some of you may know, the Global Health Governance programme of PHM follows the work of WHO closely, through the yearly meetings of the World Health Assembly & the Executive Board of WHO and the WHO regional committees. The World Health Assembly meets in May, while the Executive Board meets in Jan-Feb.

The Latin American coordination of the People's Health Movement is pleased to open the call for applications for its 2nd online International People's Health University Course (IPHU), a training program for health activists. Building on last year's successful course, we are offering it again this year in a modified format.

The IPHU is a global programme of PHM which aims to contribute to "health for all" by strengthening people's health movements around the world, organizing and resourcing learning, and sharing and planning opportunities for action by people's health activists, particularly from countries in the Global South.

The course is for Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries only in the Latin American and Caribbean region. Deadline has been extended to 6^th March 2026.

The latest bulletin of our sister publication People's Health Dispatch was dedicated to PHM member David Legge who passed away in February 2026 . It also reported on Health cooperation between Cuba and Venezuela, increasing militarisation of Germany, Indoensia's new patent legislation and India PHM’s national circle – Jan Swasthya Abhiyan – supported the historic February 12 general strike involving 300 million workers and farmers. Les pedimos disculpas por el considerable retraso en el envío de nuestro boletín informativo. Hemos estado ocupados preparando la reunión del Consejo Directivo de PHM en Rabat, Marruecos. La reunión transcurrió satisfactoriamente y fue la primera vez que nos reunimos en persona desde la última reunión del Consejo Directivo en Argentina, tras la Asamblea de Salud Popular 5. Nos complace comunicarles que, tal y como estaba previsto, PHM ha seleccionado a su nuevo coordinador global, el Dr. Aziz Rhali, de Marruecos. Esta transición representa una importante evolución en la gobernanza global del Movimiento.

La Secretaría Global de PHM seguirá funcionando como un colectivo, garantizando una representación regional diversa y apoyando al mismo tiempo el traslado de la coordinación a la región del medio-oriente y norte de Africa (MENA). También dirigirá los preparativos de la Sexta Asamblea de Salud Popular, que se celebrará en Marruecos en 2028.

Queridos compañeros, con gran tristeza anunciamos el fallecimiento, el lunes 2 de febrero de 2026, de nuestro querido David Legge, activista de la salud, cofundador del PHM, pero sobre todo un hombre querido, amigo, líder y modelo a seguir para activistas de todo el mundo. Honramos la vida de David, su lucha por la salud para todos y su compromiso con el Movimiento de Salud de los Pueblos (PHM), el movimiento al que dedicó sus esfuerzos y su amor.

En Marruecos se presentó y aprobó una propuesta formal para el plan de acción de la campaña. Ahora estamos trabajando en un presupuesto para los próximos dos o tres años. El Movimiento de Salud Popular denuncia de manera inequívoca los ataques lanzados por Estados Unidos e Israel contra la nación soberana de Irán. Estos ataques carecen de justificación legítima y violan el derecho internacional. Constituyen un acto de guerra que pone en peligro a la población civil que vive en la región en pos de la dominación imperial sobre los recursos naturales, las rutas comerciales y toda la región.

Estos ataques se producen tras más de dos años y medio de guerra genocida en Palestina, así como de ataques contra el Líbano, Siria y Yemen, donde el Movimiento por la Salud de los Pueblos ya ha documentado pérdidas masivas de vidas humanas, desplazamientos y el colapso de las infraestructuras sanitarias. La actual agresión amenaza con repetir —y amplificar— esos horrores en un nuevo frente.

La coordinación latinoamericana del Movimiento de Salud Popular se complace en abrir la convocatoria para su segundo curso en línea de la Universidad Internacional de Salud Popular (IPHU), un programa de formación para activistas de la salud. Tras el éxito del curso del año pasado, lo ofrecemos de nuevo este año en un formato modificado.

La IPHU es un programa global del PHM que tiene como objetivo contribuir a la «salud para todos» mediante el fortalecimiento de los movimientos de salud de las personas en todo el mundo, la organización y la dotación de recursos para el aprendizaje, y el intercambio y la planificación de oportunidades de acción para los activistas de la salud de las personas, en particular de los países del Sur Global.

El curso está dirigido exclusivamente a los países de habla hispana y portuguesa de la región de América Latina y el Caribe. La fecha límite de inscripción se ha ampliado hasta el 6 de marzo de 2026.
